Abdominoplasty - Tummy Tuck
Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to contour
the abdomen, tighten the muscles and remove the excess skin. Surgical
skin resection, however, is only part of the choices available
to correct the protrusion of the abdomen. I evaluate the patient
with four components in mind:
- The skin laxity, quality, texture and elasticity
- The fat content
in the skin and the hips
- The muscle tone
- Whether a hernia is present
From this evaluation, I provide recommendations
on what is needed to enhance one's appearance. If fat is the
main problem and the skin has good elasticity, liposuction alone is recommended.
A combination of liposuction of some areas with skin resection in the lower abdomen
may be the best choice for other patients. At times, a full abdominoplasty is required.
A full spectrum abdominoplasty addresses the excess skin and
the weakened muscles. An incision is made in the pubic area,
the skin is separated from the abdominal muscles up to the lower
rib cage leaving the umbilicus attached to the muscles. The muscles
are tightened narrowing the waist and correcting the bulge. Next,
the skin is pulled down and the excess removed. A new opening
for the umbilicus is made at its normal anatomic position.
General anesthesia is needed and the procedure is usually done
as an outpatient with no hospital stay.
This is a very rewarding procedure because it results in a totally
new figure.
